Know more than your neighbour

The earth is the earth as a peasant sees it, the world is the world as a duchess sees it, and anyway, a duchess would be nothing if the earth was not there as the peasant sees it.

Once Upon a Time

A subterranean feast and a staircase to nowhere.

Five unique courses, matched wines and ethereal entertainment in a restaurant that never was.

Once Upon a Time is a five-course degustation matched with Best's Great Western Wines, delivered in the basement of the Ballarat Mechanics Institutes (BMI), A room that was intended to be a restaurant but never came to be.

153 years after its creation, we are bringing it to life for one night with Peasant's signature modern take on European peasant food. An ethereal progressive musical performance by Amie Brulee. And the best of Best's wine.

A night of choreographed food, wine and art that conjures the mood of this long-forgotten space in one of Ballarat’s most loved heritage buildings.

Sycamore trees were held to be sacred in ancient Egypt and are the first trees represented in ancient art. The sycamore, also, was sacred. Peasants gather around them in rituals. In the Land of the Dead there was a sycamore in whose branches the goddess Hathor lived; she leaned out of it giving sustenance and water to deceased souls. In Memphis, Hathor's epithet was Lady of the Sycamore. ...

Our signature cocktail, Peasant's Mule

An elegant blend of Belvedere vodka, ginger, and lime, laced with lavender occasionally decorated with Geraldton wax flowers. Mystical.

Who would like to see the rest of our wine list?

Our menus are a secret until the night, however we could publish the wine list on our website if you would like to check it out before booking.

Say Aye or nay in the comments.

Amuse

Black Olive & Anchovy Galette, Roast Capsicum, Anchovy Mayonnaise.

Every bit as beautiful as it was delicious.

Notes - Galette is a term used in French cuisine to designate various types of flat round or freeform crusty cakes, or, in the case of a Breton galette, a pancake made with buckwheat flour usually with a savoury filling.

We would like to thank Viking Bread for regularly providing bread of almost unearthly quality.
